Online dating service finds iPhone owners have more sex partners Print E-mail
Submitted by actz
Wednesday, 11 August 2010
Owners of Apple's iPhone on average have more sex partners by age 30 than those who own other handsets, and the iPhone takes more attractive photos than competing smartphones, a survey of users of an online dating service has found.

This week, OK Cupid published the results of a wide-reaching poll of photos taken from the online dating service. As part of the survey, the site determined users' sexual activity by smartphone brand, based on the results of 9,785 people.

With a snapshot of 30-year-olds, male iPhone owners have an average of 10 sexual partners, while women reported an average of 12.3. That's well ahead of BlackBerry owners (8.1 partners for men, 8.8 for women) and devices that run Google's Android mobile operating system (6 partners for men, 6.1 for women).

Going beyond just a single age, the study found that iPhone users at any age between 18 and 40 have more sexual partners than Android or BlackBerry users.

The site also found that the type of camera used to take a user's picture helped to gauge their "attractiveness," as determined by users of the site. Most smartphone cameras had a negative effect on the attractiveness of the phone, but Apple's iPhone was one of the few smartphones found to produce more attractive photos.

For comparison, the Palm Pre, Android handsets, BlackBerrys, Windows Mobile Devices, and handsets from Samsung, LG, Motorola and Nokia all decreased photo attractiveness.

Online Virus Robs 3,000 UK Bank Accounts Print E-mail

Thousands of online banking customers have had their accounts drained by a sophisticated new computer virus, internet security experts say.

Computer keyboard

Experts say the virus represents a new level of sophistication

Around £675,000 was taken from a "large UK financial institution" over the last month with 3,000 customers hit - and the attacks are ongoing.

Online security firm M86 Security Labs said the customers were infected with a Trojan virus - which cannot be detected by traditional anti-virus software - while browsing the internet.

The Trojan, known as a Zeus v3, copies the passwords and usernames of customers' online details and transfers their funds to a different account.

It then gives the victim of the virus a false bank balance screen so they are unaware the cash has been taken.

M86 said the virus is potent because it has been carried on legitimate websites located in the UK and not confined to porn and gambling hubs.

The online security firm, based in California and Britain, uncovered the fraud when it penetrated the criminals' command server, based in Eastern Europe, and found a list of all the cash transfers.

Apple smartens up music file-sharing via iDisk Print E-mail
Submitted by actz

Apple has stealthily added "cloud" music streaming without telling anyone - even its own customers, according to MP3Tunes' Michael Robertson.

The feature, which is part of iDisk, allows password-free music sharing and playback.

On closer inspection - this isn't exactly true.

File-sharing has always been part of iDisk. It's more accurate to say this is an existing iDisk feature that has got smarter, and is now better integrated with the iPhone and iPod Touch.

iDisk is one of a smorgasbord of services under the MobileMe banner - including email, contacts and calendar sync, remote access, and a remote management of an iPhone - for $99 per user. An iDisk iPhone app was launched a year ago with version 3.0 of the OS, and made it trivially simple to share via iDisk. Apple hardly makes a secret of it: "Access and share your files from anywhere" is the current top slogan on the iDisk page.

What's new this time round - or since last month - is that MP3 and AAC files stream nicely in the background - and the iPod app is smart enough to know that it's playing a file from the iDisk.

That's all, really.

Hackers release carrier unlock for Apple's iPhone 4 Print E-mail
Submitted by actz
Wednesday, 04 August 2010
Hackers on Wednesday released a carrier unlock for the iPhone 4, allowing users with "jailbroken" devices to use their handset on carriers not approved by Apple.

Dubbed "ultrasn0w," the updated hack now works with the iPhone 4 and its baseband version 01.59. It is also compatible with the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS, which have basebands 04.26.08, 05.11.07 and 05.13.04.

To run the carrier unlock, users must be on a jailbroken handset, a process that modifies the iOS software and allows users to run unauthorized code. The ultrasn0w unlock can be found in the Cydia store. The unlock comes just days after hackers released a browser-based jailbreak for all iOS devices, including the iPhone 4.

The jailbreaking process takes advantage of a dangerous PDF security hole found in the Mobile Safari browser. Apple said this week it is aware of the vulnerability and is looking into the issue.

The mastermind behind the free software unlock was David Wong, a member of the iPhone Dev Team who goes by the handleplanetbeing. He is the same programmer who earlier this year ported Google Android to the iPhone.

Unlock

While many countries have access to the iPhone on multiple carriers, in the U.S., Apple's iPhone is available exclusively through AT&T. Unlocking it can allow for voice calls and EDGE data speeds on rival carrier T-Mobile. An unlock could also allow iPhone owners to use localized SIM cards while traveling abroad, to avoid paying high roaming charges when using their native carrier.

Last month, the U.S. Library of Congress reiterated its stance that unlocking is legal. It also officially made it legal for iPhone owners to jailbreak their iOS-based device and run unauthorized third-party software. Doing so, however, can still void Apple's warranty.

Saudi Arabia announces it will block BlackBerry service Friday Print E-mail

Saudi Arabia, citing security concerns, revealed Tuesday its intention to block some of Research in Motion's BlackBerry services beginning Friday.

The news comes as the latest threat in a heated debate between RIM and several governments. As reported by Reuters, India and Kuwait have bothobjected to being unable to monitor Blackberry services. Last week, the United Arab Emirates threatened to block BlackBerry Messenger, email, and browsing services on Oct. 11 if not allowed access to encrypted messages.

Unlike Apple, RIM operates its own encrypted servers for handling data from its BlackBerry devices. Countering rumors that RIM had agreed to allow select governments to monitor BlackBerry data, the Canada-based company released astatement Tuesday reassuring customers that it remains unable to access user data.

Apple to hold iPhone 4 press conference on Friday Print E-mail
Submitted by actz
Thursday, 15 July 2010
Apple this Friday will hold a press conference on its Cupertino-based campus to discuss the iPhone 4 and, presumably, the growing array of allegations from the media over the handset's reception woes.

No further details about the event, first reported by The Wall Street Journal's All Things D blog, were made available. Apple simply notified members of the press Wednesday evening that it would hold the event this Friday, July 16, at 10 a.m. Pacific Time.

The announcement comes as a firestorm of publicity has surrounded the iPhone 4, and its propensity for some users to lose reception and sometimes drop calls when held in the lower left corner. Though coverage of the issue has persisted since the handset launched in late June, it reached a boiling point earlier this week when Consumer Reports did a 180-degree turn on its stance on the iPhone 4, and announced that it could not recommend the device to consumers because of the antenna issues.

The matter has been a popular topic in the media, tipping over into the mainstream and even becoming the subject of an entire Top 10 list from late night talk show host David Letterman this week.

U.S. Will Invest $2 Billion in Solar Power Print E-mail
Submitted by actz
Tuesday, 06 July 2010

Over the weekend, President Obama announced the Department of Energy would be giving almost $2 billion in conditional funding to two solar energy companies, Abengoa Solar and Abound Solar Manufacturing.

Money will come from the $863 billion economic stimulus package. Projects funded by this move are expected to create more than 5,000 construction and permanent jobs.

One of these initiatives is the Solana project, which Abengoa says will be the largest concentrating solar power plant in the world when it’s completed. The Arizona-based plant will produce enough energy to power 70,000 households and will save the environment from about 475,000 tons of CO2 each year. Most of the development and permitting for Solana is already complete, and the project has a green light from the Department of Energy (DOE), as well.

“These are just two of the many clean energy investments in the Recovery Act,” the President said. “Already, I’ve seen the payoff from these investments. I’ve seen once-shuttered factories humming with new workers who are building solar panels and wind turbines; rolling up their sleeves to help America win the race for the clean energy economy.”

Apple announces 3 million iPads sold in first 80 days Print E-mail

Apple on Tuesday revealed that its new multitouch iPad sold 3 million units in the product's first 80 days of availability, with the most recent million sold in just three weeks.

"People are loving iPad as it becomes a part of their daily lives," Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs said. "We're working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more people around the world, including those in nine more countries next month."

Apple also said that developers have created more than 11,000 new applications for the iPad that take advantage of its multitouch user interface, large screen and high-quality graphics. In addition, it will run almost all of the more than 225,000 apps on the App Store, including apps already purchased for an iPhone or iPod touch.

Apple sold its first million iPads in less than a month, reaching that milestone in 28 days. The 2 million sales point was later reached in less than two months.

iFixit completes early teardown of iPhone 4 Print E-mail

Wednesday, 23 June 2010

To obtain one of the first iPhone 4 smartphones for teardown, Kyle of the iFixit team flew to Japan with a tent, planning to camp out in front of the Ginza Apple Store. FedEx ended up delivering early shipments to some users two days in advance, making the trip unnecessary.

The teardown posted by iFixit of an early delivery reveals the new model's A4 application processor with 512MB of RAM, the new Retina Display, dual front and rear cameras, a secondary mic for noise canceling, an oversized new battery, and custom gyroscope which along with the accelerometer provides full six-axis motion control.

The two rear exposed Phillips screws now release the back panel rather than the front glass, a design that "makes replacing the rear panel trivial, but unfortunately means that replacing the front glass will likely be rather challenging," iFixit says.

Inside the back panel, the larger new 3.7V 1420 mAh Li-Polymer battery consumes all available space, while the new 5 megapixel still camera (capable of 720p, 30 fps video capture) anchors one corner and the vibration motor holds down the other.

26% of iPhones Break Within 2 Years [REPORT]

Apple According to SquareTrade, the warranty provider for the iPhone and other electronic devices, 25.6% of iPhone owners experienced a failure in the first two years of use.

It sounds like a lot, but it’s actually below the industry’s average. Even more importantly, the iPhone is improving with this regard: the expected failure rate over 2 years was 33% one year ago, when SquareTrade only examined the iPhone and the iPhone 3G.
