I've heard some about this new LongHorn OS. My main question is will it support a REAL UI (Windows 2000 and earlier) I "personally" hate all the <<removed>> bloated appearances that Microsoft has been putting into their OS' the past few years. I heard of screen shots but can't find them or I am blind.. (I would bet I'm blind but yea)

Thanks,
Mustang97
anakinsolois
it wont support 2000, though it will support the WinXP look. Too bad. But i kinda like the new interfaces...
actz
Well i'm sure you can turn it into the older look no problem in the properties just like we can with XP right now. I wouldnt believe that they would ever scrap that look, its not even a look its the core way that its supposed to be viewed as.
Mustang97
I might just have to stick with 2k then. I think the new look is gowd awful. To bloated with appearances. Yes, you can change it to somewhat look like the old style but theirs no way to make it completly look the same. That and XP has alot of networking issues such as if you tell it to share an entire hd it wont share the entire freakin thing. dont matter much.. I run 4 systems off 2k which is the best.. tongue.gif

1) the term gay is not to be used as an offensive term, grow up.

2) it was announced by ballmer that, yes, you will be able to turn it back

Agreed. It's a shame they have to dumb the UI down. WinXP looks like a children's toy.

To me (as a child) it looks friendly and the classic looks hards and boring.

boring? It's a UI. You're not going on a safari adventure.

hard? That's the first time I've heard anyone say a UI is hard.

hahaha, go back to the cli.
gofikphoenix
I mean artistically hard, straight, rigid you get?

Anyway i know i'm gonna get longhorn unless its total crap for some reason. If i had a program with the UI and wanted the classic then i'm sure that i could just download one of the internet.
bangbang023
Longhorn is going to have an amazing UI as far as ability goes. Each object (button, tab, etc) will be a DX9 object rendered entirely by the GPU.

I like your sense of humor and I completely agree. I liked it at first because of the fact it was "new" but have never used it since.

That's interesting, bb, I didn't know this.

yeah this does sound amazing i'm looking forward to sll the UI interface but its going to require more from PC's so current win98 users may be pissed off they they dont want to upgrade but that goes for everyone with 4 year old + computers.
SuranWrap
I wish it would be like Windows 3.1...
that was the best Version of windows!
.::PHPfanatic::.
That includes me. I don't know when I'll be able to build my own computer but I hope it's tomorrow. tongue.gif

dude the OS won't be out till 2006, if someone has a machine that could only run 98, it will be a good 8 years old.

1) you wil ldefinitely need a better video card. This is how the interface is done, sort of, on the macs. all gpu driven, although very slowly done.

2) I should have said DX not DX9. I am not certaing of which DX version they will use.

ahh.. longhorn should be really good smile.gif
Mustang97
bleh.... longhorn will still have the <<removed>> appearances.. thus it being crap.. 2K and before will always own.

Last time I checked, using someone's lifestyle in a derogatory way is not a valid means to insult something
覧Vampyric覧
yes ... Win 2k was probably the best Windows... I like it..
anakinsolois
i duno why people prefer older versions of windows. I mean XP Pro is really stable, prbably more than 2000. And it looks uch cooler & is easier to use...
actz
well people that say they pref win98 or ME to XP just make me cry... win2k is a stable system and for some people it suits them better then winxp. The theme or look of an OS really shouldn稚 determine whether you like it or not.
.::PHPfanatic::.
You're completely right, actz. If you dislike both the classic and candy theme I'm sure one of the millions of custom themes out there will suit you. If you don't know how to customize the theme you learn. dry.gif
Mustang97
I like 2k style.. thus me using ONLY 2k on all my systems.. and I do know how to make my own skin .. had to make some for some friends that arn't to computer savy. :/

Exactly. That's the main reason why a lot of users like XP.. which, as you said.. shouldn't be the reason why one likes a OS.
anakinsolois
good point Vampyric, but also a cool interface just adds to the great stablity Win XP offers when compared to 98 or ME.

EDIT : @Vampyric : Nice avatar btw
M$ Agent #2
I can make XP look exactly like Win98 in less then 2 minutes after an install (its the first thing I do) I know XP has alot of stuff to make ones life easyer but I prefere the way things where done in the past I guess im a creature of habit... Anyway I hope Longhorn has some srt of Classic option for the UI if not then I will deffinatly stick with XP for a while smile.gif
anakinsolois
hehe, youre gonna have to migrate evntually M$ Agent, at some point of time, MS will stop supporting Win 98 look.
gofikphoenix
I'm using Xp, its my favourite of the windows, but thats not what we are here to discuss in the Longhorn section...is it?

Anyway...
I think that a lot of peoples computers will be massacred by Longhorn but also a lot of people have this tendicy to buy a new computer when a new Windows OS probably something to do with the advertising campaign that stores put on. Really the way it looks is only good if it helps you do something quicker and easier than without it. Otherwise its just dumb, unless its there to cheer you up on a bad day unlike (in my opinion) the evil straight edged 98. I haven't had much experience with 2000 so i can't judge it.
anakinsolois
well, i guess that by 2006 most ppl will have new compss, so there should be no probs. I mean like everyone was goin thru the same thing wwhen XP was released, and how older progs wouldnt work & stuff
bangbang023
longhorn ui......not 9x, not 2000, not xp.....back on topic.
anakinsolois
hmm, my last post was comparing how the change from XP -> Longhorn will be similar to 98-> XP. i think thats on topic bb wink.gif

how about you save comments like that for PM and realize i was talking about the 5 posts before yours.

Longhorn will be nothing like 98 - XP. The UI stayed very much the same in that conversion. In regards to UI, this will be more like OS 9 -> OS X
anakinsolois
ive never seen OS 9 or OS X. hmm, from what ive seen so far in screenshots, longhorn is a bit better (but not much) than XP. Then again, this is just an alpha and who knows how much it'll improve by 2006(i HATE MS for making it 2006)

They haven't implemented the new UI. The alpha that is out now is nothing.
gofikphoenix
Most Alpha's tend to have no big resemblence to the final product. So you'll have to wait and see for the Beta and then the Final to actually know longhorn.
anakinsolois
the longhorn symbol is dumb, but will they carry it over to the final release, considering that longhorn is just a codename??
Troa34
no it wont, because it wont even be called longhorn just like XP isnt called whistler.
Deftone
indeed but if you will notice Longhorn's initial codename was blackcomb ... i saw a video on it when they first were conceiving of their next windows, it looked different from what they show now on longhorn, at least it seemed a bit more finished, maybe we are being tricked into a sense of "wait til its done" type thing. maybe not.

so far though i cant say u can judge much from an alpha although so far i dun thikn its even worth the switchover.
bangbang023
no no, blackcomb was a different OS that was scrapped as far as I know. Blackcomb != Longhorn.
anakinsolois
BLACKCOMB?? was that a ski slope too?

I think either a slope or a lodge
rockman56
it's a slope here in vancouver, whistler/blackcomb they're pretty much next to each other
gofikphoenix
Yeh, i believe that actz (i think) has had drinks there. I believe there is also a restaurant there. Didn't Steve Balmer do some speech/ press release there lately? I still thing Windows SC will be its name. (Seemless Computing) HA!
覧Vampyric覧
hah.. I live in Canada.. not In Vancouver though.. great place to live .. smile.gif .. Whistler is great..

You've been working on NexNote too much, bb. wink.gif
I haven't been very impressed by Longhorn's DEFAULT interface so far, Alpha or not. I don't like the way IE looks either, although, since I never use IE it doesn't matter. I'll edit the interface when I upgrade anyway so it doesn't really matter.
Deftone
well in either case i liked blackcomb better than longhorn is turning out to be.

That's not the interface you will see in the final product. Do you remember what Whistler looked like? Look at XP's default now.
.::PHPfanatic::.
I'm hoping it improves even more than the transformation of Whistler to XP.
