"In the fall of 2002, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates stood on stage at Hollywood's Kodak Theater, home to the Academy Awards, and pronounced this "the digital decade."

By 2010, Mr. Gates told an audience that included director James Cameron and musician LL Cool J, everything from paying bills to seeing movies "will be done on a digital basis, and the PC with its magic software will play the central role."

If Microsoft cannot settle an antitrust case brought by European Union regulators, the company may be ordered to remove Windows Media Player as an integrated feature of the dominant Windows operating system, at least for personal computers sold in Europe.

The European Commission also could order Microsoft to include rival media players with Windows to make those products as easy for users to access as Microsoft's own music and video player."

My dad is always complaining about the EU Commission and what they do and how they are going to take over our country (uk) which i agree with. But then he babbles about how i will be conscripted into the army to fight some random war...thats when i lose him, he is so against it that he has standed (and failed) to get into parliament. Enough about my dad. What was this case about? And why do they have to remove it?

Isn't that a bit dumb using the words at least in europe well firstly what they really mean is in any member state of the european union (see dad i do listnin sometimes) and also i think its a bit bold saying at least in europe as they don't have any power (apart from armys etc) in places which aren't in europe, i mean the european union, so isn't it stupid of them to try to force Microsoft to not have Windows Media Player pre-installed in windows. Dumb argument really as a lot of people use Winamp or something else as there default player.

That's true, but look, have you tried windows server 2003. I agree it's not supposed to be used as a home os, but it runs fine. Now, it comes preinstalled, and you have the annoying right-click menus, and you can't uninstall it. That's monopolize the market. I think they should have a law to prohibit such things
SuranWrap
Well i think since they did make it, they can do whatever they want.
dont like it? dont use it.

while I think they should at least give you more of an option to remove it if you want, its really not that big of a deal, you download something else and set it as default... its really not rocket science. Without WMP 50% of home computer users wouldnt even be able to figure out how to listen to music....
