Rite i am getting fed up.
Longhorn keeps on getting delayed. I know this will create a better result etc but i thought that i would buy my next pc with Longhorn pre-installed. But that means when the Longhorn release date goes futher away so does my new (alienware biggrin.gif ) computer. So i want to know a few things....

I've heard that Longhorn need at least 512mb to run smoothly on a pc, this is not a problem as i will get a pc with a lot more ram than that. Anyway Longhorn is 64 Bit (or whatever its called) so what is the difference between a 32bit pc and a 64bit pc? Thats something i've never got, and how is one pc 32bit and the other 64bit is it something to do with the graphics card (confused wacko.gif ). Anyway if i get this computer i'm planning to get one with two say.. 120gb hardrives so i can install xp on one and longhorn on the other.. will this work? And how would i set it up? I think these are really newbie questions but to be honest im completly confused with longhorn and my life! blink.gif

Nevermind...

(I'm guaranteed to think of more questions so be prepared lol)

64bit means that the cpu can handle twice as many bits of information in one clock cycle. It has nothing to do with the graphcis card. Most graphics cards are at least 128bits, btw.

ok so how many computers are 64bit?... im still confused..as always.

EDIT: Simply put is an Alienware area 51 or Aurora 64 bit? lol

Would my theory work?

hehehe Aurora will be the Area 51 isnt at the moment

You just need to look at the processors, by the time Longhorn is released i'm sure 64bit will be more the norm in new PC's but if you buying one now then you will be fine with someting like the Aurora if your worried about 64bit
bangbang023
You don't need 64bit right now. It's just not utilized at all.

Indeed i am worried :S yeh i am thinking of buyin a knew pc in the nex 6-9 months (real soon..not) Just checkin, i like to plan these things

Well the way i buy PC's I really didnt need a 64bit right now but it doesnt hurt having one. By the time Longhorn comes out i'm sure we will have loads of programs that are 64bit compatible and by then i'll most likely have another PC anyways but if you are planning ahead and want to have a 64bit processor then Athlon 64bit really arent that much when compared, you dont need a AMD FX51/53 to have 64bit.

Honestly, I would say go with an Intel with Hyperthreading. For now, apps are going to be aiming at taking advantage of this techonology. 64bit won't really excel until there is a PC OS that is also 64bit.

yeah thats true but when people buy PC's they probably buy for the next 6 years ... not me but I think most people like to think they will have it for a while. Microsoft will be releasing 64bit later this year so its not too far off hopefully that will push the dev to start making a move.

Hyperthreading is a great technology that can compete with 64bit systems but I want to see the benchmarks of 32bit / 64bit applications. Its cool to see UT2004 demo already out in 64bit for Linux.

pretty much the main difference in 32/64 bit systems is this 32 bit systems can physicaly access up to like 2 GB of system RAM Intel has something that lets them access much much more but thats another story 64 bit systems can access ALOT more I think the number I seen was something like 4 TB so you wouldnt need to worry about the move to 128 bits for some time smile.gif anyway 128 bit systems will realy be the next big thing.

hello everybody i have yet another theory for you. Well if you all remember the AMIGA systems(a500,a1000,a1200,a2000,a3000,a4000) . Well the company that owned the rights to the sold out but they are now making the newest A1 system. and for that system they have been working on Amiga OS 4.0 from hyperion. and well i am supposed to be a beta tester and they keep holding back the prerelease. i know this doesnt look like it relates i know but if anyone remembers that the older os's were compatable with dos. i dont know for sure but i think they have something going with M$, like i say i really don't know. but i think it would explain why longhonrn isn't released yet. Just a theory blink.gif
