Ok well we all heard about this a couple of weeks ago with loads of unsatisfied customers whose ipod batter has died off after a year and half. Some even want to sue Mac for the faulty parts anyways check out this video its pretty funny and listen to the recording.

In September of 2003 the battery in my first generation ipod would hold a charge for no longer than one hour. I brought the iPod into the Apple store in Manhattan for repair and was told they do not currently offer a battery replacement program and my best option was to buy a new ipod. I then called the Apple Care 800 number regarding this issue and was told the same. I then sent my ipod to the Apple Executive office addressed to Steve Jobs with a note explaining my situation and requesting a replacement battery. The Apple Executive office contacted me via telephone to explain that Apple does not repair or replace dead ipod batteries and that it was policy of the company to recommend to the customer to purchase a new ipod when the battery fails. I then looked into and purchased a third party replacement battery, this battery was not endorsed by Apple. After the complicated installation my ipod did not work at all, even when it was plugged in. I then purchased a new ipod for $400.00.

In response to this my brother Van and I made the short film "iPod's Dirty Secret" After we finished production of the film, but not necessarily in response to it, Apple began offerring a battery replacement program for the ipod for a fee of $99 and an extended warranty for the ipod for $59.

We think Apple's new policy is fair. Our movie is a documentation of our experience.

Those guys are hardcore spray painting those iPod ads...

I think that making the battery like that was short sighted bordering on screw the customer mentality.... I know my phones wich are all rechargeble cordless phones you can replace the battery rather easily and so it should be for anything that has a rechargeble battery in it..

I can't hear the recording right now seeing as this computer has no speakers but I watch the video. This man, although it's FRUSTRATING, is just a tad...just a tad obsessed in getting his point across. Funny though. It would have been great if he spraypainted the same thing only 40x larger on the billboard they showed at the end haha. I wonder if the film had anything to do with the Apple's new policy.

Dont feel like reading what is the new policy anyways?

I was going to buy the 15Gb ipod at the end fo the month just wondering what the deal is? are they still selling the same faulty batteries that had the problem or have they done a recall?

I saw the movie and the site. My first reaction upon hearing about the 18 month issue was disbelief at Apple's stupidity on the battery replacement cost. They were being stupid, clearly.

But then I read a lot of reports of batteries lasting much longer than 18 months of heavy every day usage.

Then I saw the guys on tech TV show how easy it is to replace the battery yourself. This is something that any end user can do with no skills, but proper instructions.

Apple of course corrected the oversight when enough notice had been made of this issue in the media.

I have to wonder why these guys put so much effort into calling Apple's s#!t on this, instead of just replacing the battery themselves and doing something more constructive with their time.

There are plenty of corporations in the world doing plenty of evil things. They should take some of that moviemaking skill and apply it to an issue of real importance. They waste their gift on something as insignificant as a stupid corporate repair policy.....

Just an opinion.

im not sure but I had a friend with an ipod and I never saw him complain, not once. And he had it loaded and playing day and night.

As for the whole thing these guys went through. If i bought one for 400 bucks and it did that on me, i wouldnt spray paint. I would go burn Mac down until not even the ashes were visible

yeah it just depends I guess like some of you know i just bought my ipod 15gb last week even after all this comotion about the 18month bat life line. Apple is still saying that it will cost you $100 for a new bat but i looked around and if you dont get Apple to do it then it should be half that which is almost reasonable

Solution: Don't buy a iPod (disregarding rumors).

thing is....iPod's are soo cool! they are like the geek collector's item

I'd LOVE to own one but just to play around with.

the battery problem really isnt that big of a problem anyways and it comes down to how much music you listen to and how seriously you take your music. Its my understanding that php doesnt listen to music all that much see i have it on every hour i'm awake almost and if i'm out i'll always have it with me. I've gone through 3 minidisc's, 2 CD players in the past 5 years.

$50 for a new bat isnt too bad thats like 2 cd's
Deftone
dude...my mom just packed all my cds for the big move were having.. Its over 400 cds i have of music (not counting mp3z, im talking cds cds)

hehe. If i could get an ipod and then get my mp3z on it that woudl kick butt too
.::PHPfanatic::.
How is it that you guys have such an interest in this unbelievable quantity of music? Really?

i finally checked back with my friend. He said he's had no issues whatsoever with the batteries. Also checked with his friends that had one, none have had a problem thus far. However if you go to amazon you will be able to see that the price for a 30 GIG nomad is much cheaper. I know it may have something to do with the manufacturing company and the quality of its products, but Nomad has always been really nice. Even so, I might still want an iPod lol...damn Apple.

I love that video. I like the ending wink.gif . Apple are still stupid charging $100 for a battery! I agree that they should use normal AA or AAA rechargable batteries in like nearly everything...so much easier!
——Vampyric——
Yea those batteries are easier...... a lot easier smile.gif
.::PHPfanatic::.
A little late for a reply, Vampiric, wouldn't you say? 13 days after...

umm .. no.. it was pretty early actually..

Well just to get back to this thread i've had my ipod for over 8 months and the battery life has gone from 8h to 4h... I have to admit its survived a few bad falls and I wouldnt exchange it for any other mp3 player but the battery life has some issues.
Deftone
lets hope the oddisey doesnt continue.

EDIT: that being because im getting one and I dun wanna be discouraged wink.gif
actz
hehe i still recommend it dont worry its just a small price you have to pay for a great mp3 player... I think any rechargable battery that isnt treated the right way will loose its full life span.
Deftone
true that..overcharging also tends to shorten the lifespan smile.gif as with phones
GTX5_Crusader
I can't see the video at all... lol...
Deftone
probably took too long to check..it was basically an iPod diss smile.gif

ok, the trick to defeating this problem is to take the apple care protection program and purchase it, link it to your iPod, and it extends your warranty for another year, and makes your warranty a full one.. or you can replace the battery for $90 i belive.....
