I was downloading at more then +2M/bs.

not entirely fast enough.... thats all I gotta say heh.

err whoops, I'm tired I read it as KB/sec not Kb/sec I have a 1.5mbit/sec line usually around 1100-1200 or so, oh well.

i thought KB and Kb were both Kilobyte
Troa34
Jan 28 2004, 02:13 PM
no KB is Kilobyte and kb is kilobit.... 1 KB = 8 kb. Lines are usually rated by bits rather than bytes. but then download/upload speeds are usually referred to with bytes.

I always said kbps and and i meant kilobytes hehe.. Anyway, I dont think fast is even a word u can use for my connection lol. It is the crappiest!! It is technically cable but only on good days does it download at 32 KB/sec. On most days its just slow and crappy like a 56k line...not to mention the connection falls everyday at least

Hey Guys, is there any particular place you are going to determine your Internet Speed? What are you using to determine this?

well usually the service provider will tell you how fast your connection is and by downloading you can see if your connection is meeting these requirements.
There are also websites, including sometimes that of ur internet provider that will let u run a performance test. I looked one up for u in case u wanted to check out
http://www.toast.net/performance/oh and welcome to the forums

yeah i used to have cable back in the day...but real cable when i was in Singapore..that was the life

Constantly fluctuating but it probably averages out to around 3 Kbps. I also used to have Cable (AT&T) but it costed too much (right now it would cost 30x as much

). After switching back to 56k I almost died it was such a speed decrease.
Using your test page I load the 414,161 B image in 151.117 seconds (22 K). My connection dialogue shows me at 28.8 kbps while it always used to say 56 kbps ... too many people are using Access4Less.

that sux...but dont feel too bad..mine showed up to 29.8k and i got Cable!! supposedly

I tested about 1013kb/sec. But, that's on their servers. I tested a connection on a Symantec server, and came very close to 4Mb/sec.
Edit: I'm trying different servers, and so far have reached up to 2139kb/sec.

Jan 29 2004, 12:51 PM
yes that would make sense...performance tests are usually also dependant on the server. Its usually best to try ur provider's server if they have one

If I test it with the other computer in my home, I can connect up to 100Mb/sec.....

2.0 - 2.7 MB
the download speed is what matters and its aroun 370Kbs (KBs??)

Most speeds your provides tell you are in BITS (

, whereas your actuall connection is measured in BYTES (

. So, if you're told you'll get 3mb/s (megabits/second), that's about 375kB/s (kilobytes/second).

bits and bytes lol yes it is somewhat confusing

just wait till you get into RAM and how there can be 16/32/64/128/256 bits.... lol and thats why memory is measured by the bit... now if only hard drives followed the same rules... A high speed network connect is awsome
.::PHPfanatic::.
Mar 28 2004, 12:57 AM
It's just a matter of memorizing the conversion factors. This is do not bother and/or enjoy going through unless it's useful.

Mar 28 2004, 03:46 AM
yeah, im pretty used to it now. Basically 1 bit represents a a small puece of ur hard drive which can hold a 0 or a 1.

well my new service is now Shaw in Vancouver I get 3mb/s but apparently I've heard that unlimited means unlimited till you download about 10Gb then they send you warnings so its not all that great but the connection is fast enough... Vancouver just sucks when it comes to ISP's

10GBs? That's it? I've already put 48GBs on my Hard drive in 4 weeks... and that's not including the 118GBs of data that is still in temporary file format... in less than a month...

We just did a recent test on our system:
