Sorry eru, no, but I'd like to add to what M$ said about running more than one anti virus program, it is a definite don't do thing, they have a tendency to conflict (they read each other as invaders). For a while there was a similar type of thing going on with Ad-aware and SpyBot, AA was reading Spybot's backup/recovery/restore files as spy-ware (it wasn't), they have since addressed the issue and now the two get along fine. On the other hand, because anti virus programs run deep into your system it is highly rec'd not to run more than one at a time.
As for previous Q's about Zone Alarm, their firewall is one of the best, a bit of a pain to configure at first but it has become more user friendly recently. Once it is configured, that is, once it 'knows' what programs you'll allow to access the internet and vice-versa, its resource usage seems to diminish as well and it just does its thing. They've had an anti-virus for a while (which isn't free, which is probably why they can continue to offer the free firewall etc) and it seems to be well regarded. In May when my Norton expires I'll be switching to Avast (yes, i know, get NAV to uninstall itself) or AVG but will definitely keep my ZA firewall (btw, one of the worst foo-paws I ever assaulted my pc with was trying to un-install ZA, instead of just shutting it off, what a mess. If peeps choose aggressive programs like this best to learn to live with them and if you do choose to get rid of it make darned sure you know what your doing or look forward to a full re-format).
ERU, I seem to have gotten rather long-winded here but to address your question about Trend Micro, my curiosity is piqued so I'll have a look-see what the people at some of my fav security sites have to say about it. I'm sure there are others here who know more and will add their opines to this. I firmly believe you can't get 'too secure' in this day and age but you must be careful not to over-do it. smile.gif

Bit Defender 8.0 Professional Plus. Its an anti-virus, firewall and anti-spam. The best tool Ive seen around!!!

I was just on their site shravan, it seems like a good product and is well regarded. I especially like the behavior learning capabilities of their anti-virus programs and the way they tackle spam. Hm, almost tempted to fork over some loot (44$ US here but I notice there are some sites offering up to 20%off).
Link for the curious here: http://www.softwarecasa.com/pprod/112902dd.htm?source=overt
I also notice that when I ran the MSN search for it that there are a number of sites claiming cracks for the pro model. I neither agree with or endorse such things, hey these folks gota make a living.
Still though, as good as it seems it does cost and there are a number of very good freeware AVs and firewalls out there. The spamming thing really really pizzes me off and it makes advanced programs very appealing . As an all-in-one package it looks good , esp. for small business applications. smile.gif For larger busnesses though I think that co.s like the Sophos group are on top of the game. Has anyone done any research on Bit Defender's resource usage? Just curious as to how it stacks up with other packages out there.

Hello, I'm currently using MicroAntiVirus. This program has worked better than any previous antivirus program I’ve had. It installed easily, updates all the time and does the job. It’s very simple! After using Norton and McAfee for years and having viruses get through and wreck havoc on my computer, finally there is a antivirus program that catches all the viruses that have hit my machine. I found out about MicroAntivirus from a friend who’s a real techie. http://www.mavsolutions.com

is it free though??

I'm runnig Norton but am still geting a few infections, some that it detects and does npthing about, spyware mainly, so I instaled adawaree but whenever I runed adaware scan my comptuer told me that there was an infection tying to eliminate sucha and such a file and the PC will be restarted in 60 seconds. Is this becasue I have Norton installed or is there another problem ?

I actually hate Norton. The CPU usage on lower machines is just rude. The message you are getting is a feature in Adaware. It'll reboot your PC and scan for Spyware again. This is because some spyware cannot be removed while it is running, so it needs to get at it before it starts up (I.e just after a reboot).

Basically the BEST antivirus would would be better than all others at getting rid of viruses. A perfect antivirus program would be one that fits everything from catching all viruses to pleasing the user. Since the second does not exist then based on my experience the BEST antivirus program is Panda with TruPrevent OR both Kaspersky antivirus WITH Panda TruPrevent personal. All the others are OK but not good enough compared to Panda's detection rates and kaspersky's large database (Panda still detects around 20,000 more than most others including Norton). Simple as that

Anyone here know what AV Force ( http://avforce.com/en/index.php ) is all about?

I am not an expert. I do not work for any software company nor do I claim to know anything about software code. But what I do know is that the antivirus software called avast bugs me. I first installed it yesterday when i read all the great claims about the software. I used total uninstall before i did to make sure it didnt mess anything up. When I first ran it, right of way it called out to a server twice and tried to access the internet. I would know because I have zonealarm. I would never allow a program to access the internet before I have given it permission first. The programs that do it without your permission bug me and make me suspisous. It does have a option to turn off the Always on connection as I would suspect they would like to know why it didnt call out to there company when you fanally update the software. anyways... It installed fine and I ran it once but it locked up at about the 120000th file in the high scaning mode.
(1800+ AMD 968mb ram 333bus) I know the update would probably fix that but I downloaded the file from directly from the avast web site 2 days ago. why would it need to be updated? and also why isnt there a dat file like mcafee so i dont need to let the program call home? anyways... Its free and i didnt lose anything. But wait there's more....When I decided to uninstall avast, it took about 1 millisec for it to tell me i was done. When I used total uninstall on it, There was plenty of those nice dlls in the system file that were convenently missed. BTW total uninstall gets rid of those nasty registry files that you never can find too. Anyways, if you do not care if anyone might be wrong about this program being not what they say, go ahead there are penty of reviews saying the opposite to what i am saying. Its just i dont like it when avast calls home right when you install it. :shades: [SIZE=7][SIZE=1][FONT=Arial]

I have it, let it call home if it wants, it is just autochecking to see if there are updates which it will install by itself, I too use ZA firewall btw, so set it to always allow. Have had this on my system for several months now absolutely no probs and if you're worried there is hidden spybundles or trackers, so don't worry. One thing that Avast will check for is if you have it registered or not, it'll bug you till you do.It is not a big deal, just get your registration No. and submit it, all it does realyl is allow the program to update past the 60day trial period. Like I said, don't worry about it, its a very good AV. Hope this helps ya relax a bit.

I've changed mine yet again! Now I use F-Secure Internet Security 2005. Its nice, clean and has Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, Anti-Phishing, Firewall and Anti-Spam! It takes up a lot less resource than Norton and my systems fast.

Bitdefender is quite good, Ive been using it for well over a year now with no problems

I suggest using AVG Free in conjunction with Ewido Security Suite... Ewido is set up at first as a 14 day trial with full functionality but the scanner is free for personal use and doesn't run out. I also use TrendMicro's online VirusScan. If you're not already, I recommmend using Spybot S & D and Ad-Aware SE also. I probably sound like a paranoid freak but it's better to use multiple programs since any one program can have small flaws in it's search that allow certain programs through, another program might catch that. On top of that, I've noticed that Adware that opens a running process can be ore detrimental to a PC's performance than almost every virus I've ever encountered...Except Monkey B but that was a long time ago...Win 95 to be exact. Deadly, that one...

BTW I've also never had problems running software with AVG running, though i'd probably get slightly better performance in some games but my machine is hardly cutting edge anyway (3000 Athlon 512 MB Ram@166MHz GeForce FX 5200 128MB software OC'd).

Been about a year now since I ridded my machine of Norton and installed Avast as my resident AV program and I am extremely pleased with it, size/resource wise, compatibility (runs fine with other's firewalls, ZA in my case and doesn't seem to conflict with anything else either), and updating (does it on its own for the most part other than a recent build update which it asked to install). The only thing I've noticed is that when it updates automatically my homepage loads a little slower but considering the POS PC I have its understandable.
Would I recommend this AV? You bet! AVG is also very good (my dad runs it on his new PC) but, from what I understand, when it encounters a virus it is a bit more 'hands on' than Avast is and reqires one to isolate bugs manually whereas Avast does this step for you.
Would I ever go back to Norton? Not at their prices (costs and system usage), ever. My .02cents worth smile.gif

i have avg and absolutely love it! specool.gif
