Actually, Milk,

Being that this is a discussion board, people will post their opinions and thats what makes this what it is.

If there were no differing of opinions then there would be no need for a discussion board at all.

You are correct in your statement that "It's your box your working with - not anyone else's" but we can still post our opinions and agree/disagre with others.

What would you think of these boards if everyone agreed with everyone else ? I would find that rather boring.

Back on topic
After trying a few of the AV's suggested here, i find myself back using Avast, nothing has topped it yet as far as i'm concerned.

QUOTE (Milk @ Apr 13 2004, 05:13 AM)
Your's isn't better than mine - and vice versa: you pick the application to work for you. If it works then what do you really care if someone else dislikes it/can't get it to work/hates it/or whatever - well ?

It's your box your working with - not anyone else's. If your choice is effective, then it's the right choice - if it stops being effective FOR YOU, then change it.

Stop preaching, it doesn't help anyone - and that's supposed to be the purpose of the thread, right ??

Amen, never thought I'd be saying that to something Milk said wink.gif
.::PHPfanatic::.
I can see what Milk is saying but I also strongly agree with what yaggy says. In my opinion it is much better to disagree more than agree or at least give both points of views at the least. I understand that this is an AV thread and should remain an AV thread but it seems we've been depleted of users to discuss this topic (ie: I use Avast!), therefore it doesn't seem off-topic to argue over two options seeing as it's still, undeniably, related to AV choices. Of course, when things get out of control (ie: foul language, flames) then it's okay to put your foot in, otherwise I find no fault in it. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong or illogical.

Hi. I just want to share my experience with you guys. I was surfing this post and others on order to find a good AV thad wont hog my system. I thought that most AV will do the job right, so what i was paying attention was the low resources. I tried several AV. What i most like at first because the easy way to use, was the AV Panda Titanium. It was kind of fun too. After some time, my pc start having malfunction!... Panda said I had a file with a virus... and he said it cleans... but i still having some kind of strange behaviours in my pc... After a while, Panda stop function... my pc windows task manager was block by admin. (i was the admin. and didnt do it!) and also the regedit. My firewall keeps me warning açll the time i connect, that lsass was trying to connect to some stranges sites... I install several AV up to date, an no one found anything. ... I was runing AVG... and it seems for him all perfect... but it wasnt... then I install NOD32... guess what, it found trojan win32/mosucker.c ... and it clean the file infected plus guide me to the right way, to clean the system file too... He did it... and did it well! So, I want a AV that wont hog my pc... but first of all, I want a AV that do the job. NOD32 rocks! You can trust it!!! shades.gif
psYchotic
Yeah, I use NOD32 too now, I kinda like it. It's not reallt the AV that is the lowest on system resources, but it's not all that bad. I kinda like it, except that I can't disable the resident module (the thing that scans every single used to file) using just one or 2 mouse clicks.
anakinsolois
i use McAfee 8.0 noww, and it seems pretty good , with low start up times
.::PHPfanatic::.
I use Norton AV Corp Edition and it's very much unlike SystemWorks in that it's much less of a resource hog. I'd recommend it to anyone.
TrickFinlay2
i've been meaning to try that php,but for now im using avast 4
anakinsolois
I used to use Corp edition too, but one fine day, Norton Firewall refused to update itself. After uninstalling it, Symantec Corp refused to start up. Instead of downloading all the updates again, I decided to go for McAfee
SuranWrap
I Love McAfee.
Rezza
Symantec CE, I've stuck with this baby more than any other AV I've ever tried.
reaper24x
I use Avast, it found mydoom when that was around and i haven't had a virus since i got it.
——Vampyric——
Symantec CE is, in fact, the best... not a matter of opinion, every test shows it the best.
anakinsolois
I wouldve agreed with that too, except for one little flaw. Notron Firewall screwed itself up while downloading new updates. On removing the firewall, CE just conked out and refused to start. Now im on McAfee, which is good, but heavier on system resources.
anakinsolois
Well, McAfee occupied just too much system resouces, and its back to Symantec CE and NO fire wall this time, ive had it with norton personal firewall tongue.gif
mutinymonger
Hey!

I use AVG Free Edition, version 6, as well as Bit Defender 7.2. Bitdefender has just released its software (bitdefender.com), and provides an online scan. It is quite nice, and fixes viruses that Norton (2004 Pro) wouldn't even notice. With the pair of them, nothing touches my system. I found norton devoures RAM, and slows performance greatly, while AVG and Bitdefender combined don't take 1/8 of the CPU performance. I would strongly reccomend Bitdefender.

Anyone any idea on Norton Internet Security Pro 2005?

Anyone any idea on Norton Internet Security Pro 2005?

What do you mean "any idea"?
actz
At the moment i'm using NOD32 and its perfect for me, very low resource hog and it scans faster then any other antivirus prog without missing a single thing... "any idea" = any opinion

I hate Norton for one simple reason it always slows down my system and 2004/5 versions even slow down my internet to half the speed. I know you can turn off some auto functions but its just not worth it for me and I dont like to have firewall spyware scanner and all the other nick nacks.
M$ Agent #2
I agree with Actz im not a big fan of intergration on the aplication level... I like to pick my own Antivirus from the best thats out at the time and the best firewall and the best spyware remover and pop up stopper (although the SP2 one is pretty good) hmmm right now im using EZ Trust EZ Armor its a set too but you can chose what you wish to install and after that you would never know it came with other stuff. After my free year runs out I will probably go back to AVG free edition its was pretty good and it was free smile.gif
Identiti
Norton = Pooooooooooooooooooooo
I use Kaspersky (KAV)..... Works like a gem
cyberghost
avg grisoft antivirus software is best by far and zonealarm is great now i ran tests on it and it do a great job of blocking 98% of the ports
best of all both are free
shravan
I use Bit Deffender Pro Plus 8.0. Its pretty good. Has anti-spam,anti-virus and an intergrated firewall. So all my security needs are taken care of! Its light on system resources too.

Deftone
i tried getting NOD32 but it came up with an error on download.
GTX5_Crusader
Right now I'm not even using one... but as soon as I get around to installing it, it's going to be Norton, hands down.
Deftone
Norton couldnt even find the virii i had on my comp yesterday....plus its hella slow.
Fixedamage
Symantec AV CE...is the way to go.
yaggy
There is NO "best" anti virus !

Most AV programs are basicly the same , just pick one that feels good to you.

Although there is NO best, Norton could be considered one of the Worst. You have to pay for the program then pay yearly to keep it updated ROFL not a friggin chance when there are free products with free updates that simply work better and do not hinder your system.

Heres a couple of Recomended AV's

Avast - Free with free daily updates and very light on your system. If there were a best, this would be it.
Nod32 - Very good detection rate, also light on your system, not free though.
AVG - Theres a free version and its pretty good, Updates are a lot less frequent than Avast.

And a couple to avoid

Anything Norton - NEVER EVER will Norton see my system, this bloatware is notorious for causing conflicts and slowing performance and they want you to pay for updates that are less frequent than some Free products, Just typing the name Norton almost caused my system to crash.
Anything Mcafee - Similar, but not as bad as Norton.

Why would anyone pay for and AV when there are better products that are free ?
Deftone
i have to agree with u there yaggy, I got NOD recently thanks to actz and Im really diggin it.
GameSkillPhil
AVG is free, powerful, and fast. What else do you need??

From where did you download it?

Picking AV software is a tough decision. blink.gif wacko.gif help.gif
GameSkillPhil
not really I pick the free kind
GameSkillPhil
AVG Baby
psYchotic
I switched to Avast last week, because for the first time in quite a while, I've been hit by a virus. Or maybe it was just a malicious script. But it screwed up my computer. But I thought I'd just get avast for a change tongue.gif By the way, for those that haven't been watching this thread : I was using AVG
todbran
I use BitDefender Free Edition. I've had Avast and AVG and it seems to do a little better job than thos 2 do. Plus, its a little easier to manage.
GameSkillPhil
AVG because it's free.
Durotan
Avast 4.6 Free and Just as good if not better then the "Paid" AV's
ujjwald
After trying out a lot of antivirii

Kaspersky for those needing the best protection

Antivir PE for those (like me) who need a light AV which doesn't interfere with the system.
maudin8
ok i don't know if this is a dumb question or not, i have only had my cpu for 3-4 months now. anyway, i have read this thread and haven't heard anything about zone alarm. i was wondering what the gods thought of this software. my dumb question is---can you have more than one AV on your system? Would this help or just take up space??? thx.
Troa34
thats a firewall not AV biggrin.gif. Im pretty sure quite a few people around here use it and would recommend it. I've never used it myself, I live dangerously and only use Antivirus.
maudin8
but i have acessed it and used the option to run anti virus scan. is this an upgraded version of zone alarm?
GameSkillPhil
Zone Alarm does make a Antivirus with their firewall software. I just looked it up I have only used the firewall this might be a new thing. Zone Labs who makes Zonealarm is really only known for their firewall, so I don't know if I would trust an Antivirus made by them. And yes I do believe you can have more than one antivirus installed on your computer you may not be able to run them at the same time though. Besisdes this takes a lot of processing power to do . The more antiviruses you have the more power is used up. Especially if they run all the time.
tom_3
go to housecall ...
no download nothing running stay away from more than one running on your machine it is not needed ....
get a good firewall google zonealarm.
its free
and most of all use common sense tiredsmiley.gif
M$ Agent #2
In answer to your question no do NOT intall more then one virus scanner on your system first off it can fudge up your whole system so bad you might not get it back... virus scanners work at the driver level and when two drivers try to use the same resorces things get ugly. In answer to your other question I would have to say I liked there firewall its pretty secure and user friendly cant get much better then that smile.gif on there virus scanner I have no idea Zone Alarm to me just is a good firewall but if they build the virus scanner as well as they do there firewall it will at least be better then nothing at all smile.gif
GameSkillPhil
Yes but if it can't find the viruses I would rather have something that can.
maudin8
well, i think it must be somewhat good. i d\l a freeware at work and scaned it with norton corporate edition. and believe me, this must be a good AV, because it is gov't. but when i got home, i scaned my disc with zone alarm just to double check, and it picked up a virus in the form of something like *.Q and quarentiined it. That made me feel good about Zonealarm, but i don't hear much about it. anyone else know anything?
ujjwald
Zonealarm's security suite seems a decent product, check CNET's review - http://reviews.cnet.com/ZoneAlarm_Security...7-30898745.html

Zonealarm Firewall is quite a good product (though it takes too much resources), and the AV may be decent. You would of course be better off with a standalone av like Kaspersky, but if everything is going fine, don't bother to switch smile.gif
GameSkillPhil
Yeah I like virus software that doesn't slow down the operation of the computer
ERU
What do you guys think of Trend Micro PC Cillin? It seems to get good reviews. Anybody have any experience with it?
