What to do this? What equipment and software?

Well, I know you can create panorama pictures simply by using a tripod and making a bunch of photographs with overlap. What you do then is basically paste the pictures together to make a wider one. I've seen digital camera's that do this themselves, which is kinda neat. But how to make something like that? I suppose you'd need to do the same as I said above, but then make sure you have the whole 360°, and then find some software that'll loop this picture for you. I suppose it could be done with a gif animation program (the GIMP can work with animated GIFs).
