Hi folks,

Ive been away for almost 8 months (my health took a landslide for a little while) but im back now. I hope you all had a good summer, er, now winter. Can say more later, but right now I have a question for you techies. I have a old (i'm frouning that I can finally admit it) Desktop:

XP Home
1.5ghz P4 (non HT or DC)
767Mb SDRAM
HD1 slow ass 80G Sata 100
HD2 not as, but still slow ass 60G Sata 100
motherboard is a bigole ???
256 ATI Raedon

I think thats all, it mightnot be exact because it is currently in my mothers garage, but its close enough. I am considering buying a:

Intel Core2 duo E4400
Asus P5B-MX MB
1G DDR2 667Mhz Memory (I think its in 1 chip, not sure)
250G 7200rpm SATA HD
Samsung crapass DVD-RW
Intel 3000 Graphics (dont know much about this one)
17" ATX case

Doesent say whatpower supply is but im going to assume something adequit and cheap. Its going for $439Cad. I want your opionions on how much of an upgrade it is, be honest, brutally if need be. I know its not some new PC with all the bells and whistles, but then again, im poor so I want a really good PC in 2005-2004-whichever. Also if this is a decent value. Yea Yea it all depends on what you want, but if you were going to buy this system, would you pay $439 new?

Thanks for your imput.

Sorry, too late to edit my previous post, but this isnt going to be used to run any High Req software, the only thing I want is to be able to run World of Warcraft: Frozen Throne when itcomes out, I installed the first expansion only after having to grab a 512Mb bringing me up to 767Mb.I know the system Req's havent been released yet, but the first system above runs the Burning Crusade (first expansion) just fine but can lag a bit when multitasking/downloading items in the background.

And im tired of when moving file 1, 2 and 3 each say 10G file 1 takes 15 minutes, with 1 and 2, it takes an hour, when moving all 3 files it takes about 4 hours give-or-take.

Again, thanks for the input.

PS is my avatair picture, the stone head of zeus still on file somewhere, I dont think I have it on my PC anymore andI rather liked it?

Hey there, welcome back!
I'm not too sure about your avatar, it might still be in the gallery on http://archive.geeknewz.com, but I went ahead to take a look, couldn't find it.
About the computer: it might be a good idea to replace the HDDs or something, because it sounds like they're really really slow. And about the price: honestly, I have no idea. I bought an "entire" computer for about 200€ a coupla months ago, but then again, it's a server. So all I bought was:
  • AMD Sempron 3200+
  • 1GB of that supposedly very fast RAM
  • Maxtor 250GB 7200rpm
  • very cheap mobo
  • cheap PSU+case combo
I only use that PC as a server, so it's running 24/7, serving pages and whatnot. But anyway, I'm not too sure how much 439 canadian dollars amount to.
It might be cheaper to go a little lower with the upgrade, like buying a 2GHz or so CPU, not necessarily dual core, maybe a mobo, if you need, a better graphics card, new RAM, and because of your slow HDD problems: new HDDs.
But once again, honestly, I'm not as great with hardware as I am with software, so you might wanna wait for someone else to reply smile.gif
