MAINLAND CHINA has developed laser cannon technology which could stop Taiwanese control systems in their tracks, a report claimed today.

According to the Taipei Times, China has already created a high energy laser cannon and it's been deployed in Fujian Province, opposite the renegade island.

It quotes a Taiwanese defence official as saying that it believes that as many as 20 units are already in place across the Taiwan Strait.

The command and control systems of Taiwan are in jeopardy if China has deployed such a weapon, the story, which you can find here, continues.

The main purpose of this weapon would be to scramble all electronic equipment on a military base so it wouldnt be able to operate?

100 kilometres is pretty damn far they can do it from coast to coast

I believe so - there has been a long-standing project in US and Russia on something similar.

it is as likely to be propoganda as anything else - but it makes for interesting reading nevertheless.

hehe well china is famous for propoganda so that could be. It seems like Taiwan is going to take it pretty seriously as would any country that has a laser pointed to them or even plans of it.

speaking of which - I remember the laughing when it was leaked that France's nuclear arsenal couldn't be considered a threat to East-West relations, because it had always primarily been targeted at Germany - (i.e. all of Germany, not just the part that was once under Sovier-led forces..)

so yeah - propoganda or not, security is almost always about perception, so regardless of whose propoganda it might or might not prove to be, the perception of something like this can't be a good thing.

This is pretty interesting. I wonder how it would handle bad weather conditions and such.
