My dad works on the computer a lot, and he told me that he was getting Carpal Tunnel Syndrome from entering people’s phone numbers into a data Excel Spreadsheet. My step-mom told him to get a software called Dragon Naturally Speaking so he wouldn’t have to type or mouse over anything much anymore. They said that they can say, “Open Excel Spreadsheet,” “File, New,” and “Highlight Column A,” and these commands within this Excel and many more programs will do as what the voice picks up what the person is saying on the top left hand corner. Ever since they started using it, they have been less stressed about their working at home.
Do you guys know of any more programs similar to Dragon that has voice recognition?

I tried to set one of these for my cousin. Voice Recognition software is getting there but still has alot of work to go.

Not sure of any others but if anyone wants to do a bit of research on this perhaps we could knock up a GeekNewz Exclusive community review on voice recognition software smile.gif

By the way nice choice of topic wink.gif

Yes, a good topic smile.gif Sort of covered HERE a while back but not quite what you were asking.
Voice recognition systems have been with us for a while and there are quite a few out there that will do the job, most where intended for people with disablities origionally and for people whose jobs require many hours at the keyboards they can be a real wrist saver too. One of the best resources out there in terms of finding the proper application to meet your requirements is THIS ONE , some (most I think but I haven't checked out all their links yet) of the programs are free to use (like 'e-speak' for windows 2000 and XP that has over 100 voice commands)and their resource base covers all but the most obscure operating systems and provides links to the leaders in this field, this site covers a vast amount of information and some is really interesting stuff.
Hope this helps!

I think that Dragon is supposed to be the best by far. The new version (I found a review here: http://arstechnica.com/reviews/apps/speaking.ars ) is supposed to work directly out of the box, no training necessary, with a 98% accuracy. Doesn't get much better than that.

yeah that's what I my dad was telling me as well.
I might even want to try it myself.

I've been thinking about it too. I mean, if it works there's no reason not to. If you think about it, typing is old fashioned and stupid and hard on the body.
jean_grey
I definitely agree with you on that.
My dad has been typing on the computer for nearly 15 years, and he figured that it's time for a change. He was telling me how he had a discussion with his frend about how older generations are having a hard time learning new technology things that the newer generations are learning quickly. Maybe the newer generations can make a difference to the older generations by simplifying computer use by using Dragon Version 9.
Do you guys think that Dragon has the possibility of simplifying some computer technology that the odler generations are having a hard time with?
