Full Version: More Power Supply Explosions! =/

I know there is another topic about this, but I want to start a new one since this may be another problem

Last Friday I built a new computer [3rd build] and without thinking used the power supply cord for my much older computer to test if my new one was working. Well once I turned on the PS, it made a huge blue spark which came out where the PS was plugged in. After trying the new PS cord, I realized I killed it. The old cord said 125V and the new one says 250V..I figure that less voltage going into the PS wouldn't do this, but not knowing much about electrical theory maybe the power supply demanded more volts than the older cord could supply.

With this said, I have a few questions:

1. Could this have damaged the mobo + any other parts? [didn't smell anything funky, see any smoke, or any noticable burn marks on mobo, but I may have missed something.

2. If I fried the PS, what are the chances that I can fix it through replacing a fuse? [I didn't check inside because the warranty is void if I open up the PS]

3. If the fuse can probably be replaced, where would I be able to find one for a computer power supply, local hardware store, computer, or specialty store?

Note: The power supply is more than enough for my rig: 500w Aspire PS, 2gig ram, 7900 GT, AMD 3700+ 2.2 ghz

Dennis

Welcome to the site Dennis, enjoy your time here!
Unless you are in Europe and running 250v current you are not at fault for your PS failure (you did have the switch on it set to NA 110v (120v?)current yes?). Take it back for a replacement, sounds like it was defective. Just because it says 250v on the new cord doesn't mean thats what it actually uses, ergo the switch for countries using that voltage.
In theory it shouldn't have damaged your board but you won't know until you get your new PS in. Let us know how it goes!
