how can I link notepad to .RPT files and have have users tell windows to open my file with an .RPT exension with notepad? I am doing a project and have no idea how to do this, cannot find any information except the fact it is a crystal report extension (which I knew that). Any help would be greatly appreciated... unsure.gif

Greetings again, sorry I didn't understand your question the first time in the shout box and steered you here which is probably the wrong forum, oh well if one of the mods runs into it they'll move it to an appropriate one. As to your problem, could you maybe tell us a bit more about what you are trying to do? Are you trying to use a hyper-link to a report file? From what I've just googled, and I admit to knowing nothing about this at this time, notepad should open an .rpt file as .txt by default no? Dunno, has me curious though so I'mma go google some more and see if maybe I can find you some info, just it seems not so straight forward as that so the more you can let the good folks here know about exactly what you're trying to do the better.

Look at the last several post, I am thinking this might be what you are asking to solve, hope it helps and please let us know if you figured out what your doing (or if you can't). Remember, there are lots of people here who love to help others but the better the question (conciseness) the better the answers! Cheers biggrin.gif

Thankyou GTX, this topic should be under 'softweird', just spent half the night running around google on this stupid topic lol, tons of info all spread out all over the place but I'll fire along two more links to bb65 here> http://www.codeguru.com it has a fairly large forum on crystal reports .rpt, I'm not going any further with this one as all I'm doing is learning something I don't use. Babyboop65, you should read some of the tutorials on VB Crystal Report here is a link to an on-line book that is still in the works, it is a little beyond me but maybe you can glean something usefull here> http://www.crystalreportsbook.com . Tired, going to bed goodnight and good luck. smile.gif

Sorry guys, didn't mean to make anyone frustrated.........I will give you the information here:

Link Notepad to .RPT files....A user asks your advice about how to load an ASCII text file into Notepad automatically. He/she says that he nows windows automatically recognizes certain files extensions. For example, Windows knows that a .txt extension is a text file, and when the user double-clicks the file, Windows will auto open it with Notepad. The user says he regulary receives ASCII text files from an information clearinghouse with an .rpt ext. He would like to be able to double-click the file and open it automatically with Notepad. Please descirbe the proceedure that will let the user tell Windows to open any file with an .rpt extension with Notepad?

I think that it is a matter of setting up crystal to do this, I may be wrong. From the sound of it you want the files opened with notepad but I think this may be backwards, you may have to open [i]from[i/] note pad to start with. I know I have settings for images, that is in which program to open them, once set they always open in that program. But these are resident on my PC, not links to elsewhere. There may be other things to look at if you're talking about links to dynamic (updating) graphs, but I really think that this should be covered by crystalreports FAQs or support, they may be able to point you to a (mystery ta me)windows setting that will accomplish this. Sorry I don't have the answers but you do now have a couple of good links that should get you pointed in the right direction. Cheers! smile.gif

Easy enough smile.gif just right click the file in question (it doesnt matter wich file just so long as it has the desired extension) select properties and assuming your using XP there will be a button upper right hand corner says opens with and has an icon the button says "change" with that you can alter the defult behavior in windows to open that file. Say with notepad.exe instead of the crystal ap.

Another way you can do it:

Go to Windows Explorer
Click "Tools" on the top menu bar
Click "Folder Options"
Click the "File Types" tab
Find the RPT extension (If you can't find it, you can click "New" and add it manually)
Click on it, then in Details click "Change"
Notepad should show up in the list. Click it and hit OK. It's all set now.
