Hello,

I was wondering if anyone new if it was possible to upgrade my processor on an IBM Thinkpad 390X model 2626-LNU. I have a PIII 450 MHz in it. Just want MORE POWER!!! Ha.

Probably not. When this laptop was popular notebook CPU's weren't sold in retail.

Probably. Though some Thinkpads had built in processors, like their 200MHz PII versions (I think thats one of em), if your CPU is Slot1 then you can go up to a 600MHz PIII (Slot1). If not they can be OC'd to over 500MHZ. Stock RAM was 64Mb (removable) but they are capable of using 512Mb (in two expansion slots) which would be a good place to start. Hope this gets ya pointed in the right direction. Remember, Google is your friend! smile.gif

Thanks. I have a 256 MB RAM chip on it's way to me, and I'm looking for another one so I can get that 512. I looked it up and my CPU is a mmc2. Not sure if that makes a difference or not.

Cool! Found this here> http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=12610 and according to the thread you might be able to upgrade to an 850mmc2 which would give you 700MHz without any mods to the board. Now, it mentions tp 390x on which this works, I be careful to make sure this is applicable as many notebook components (including the RAM) seem to be model specific. At the very least I've given you a decent resource site you may consider joining for better info.
Phil, in the future you would do well to do a bit of researching before responding with trite and incorrect information just for the sake of posting, this does not help anyone. You may want to talk to one of the mods to remove the erroneous post. smile.gif

Thanks a lot for the info! Hopefully I can make this laptop last for a long time and, even though it is very outdated already, keep up with other computers. This upgrade is probably the best thing that I can do with it, so it is going to work really good now. Thanks again!!

Little edit here> whiplash, when you pull apart your tp be careful when you put it back together, do not over tighten your screws, IBM uses plastic coated ones that apparently strip easily if over torqued, might consider new screws. Good luck with your upgrade!
