Full Version: Installing XP on new PC

I've just bought the parts for a new PC and connected it all up (pretty sure this is ok). When I try to boot/setup XP SP2 I get the blue screen treatment with error 0X0000007B. I'm probably missing something straight-forward but I'm no expert. Is to do with SATA II?

I've got MB - Asus P5WD2
HD - Western Digital SATA 2 250GB (WD2500KS)

Please help, I've got a brand new PC collecting dust!

1. If an IRQ or I/O port address conflict exists between the boot controller and another controller, Windows XP either stops responding (hangs) or displays a "Stop 0x0000007B" error message. If you recently added new hardware, remove the new hardware or reconfigure it so that it does not conflict with the resources of any other installed controllers.

2. If you are using a SCSI hard disk, check the SCSI chain for correct termination. Remove any unused SCSI devices or make sure that each SCSI ID is unique.

3. Make sure that drive translation is turned on (if it is required) and that it has not been changed. For example, if you recently switched controllers, this issue may occur.

Make sure that you have all the cards set in right and blue or the red side of the cables like the cd-rom drive the hard drive floppy driver on pin 1 Then try it again. if that don't work you might have a bad hardware.

Cheers guys, I'll try these out tonight.

Thanks guys but I've not made any progress. Feel like I've tried everything but still can't get XP installed.

How would I know if I've got an IRQ conflict?
Not got a SCSI HD either

I've downloaded the latest WinXP Western Digital Serial ATA RAID Controller but using the F6 option & selecting it gives me this message,

"WinXP/fasttx2k.sys caused an unexpected error (18) at line 2113 in d:\xpsprtm\base\boot\setup\oemdisk.c"

which means absolutely nothing to me except that it didn't work. I've already tried the 64 bit Makedisk option on the ASUS support disk. It gave these options:

1. Intel® 82801GR/GH SATA RAID Controller (Desktop ICH7R/DH)
2. Intel® 82801GR/GH AHCI RAID Controller (Desktop ICH7R/DH)
3. Intel® 82801FR SATA RAID Controller (Desktop ICH6R)
4. Intel® 82801FBM AHCI RAID Controller (Mobile ICH6M)
5. Intel® 82801ER SATA RAID Controller (Desktop ICH5R)
6. Intel® 6300ESB SATA RAID Controller

Tried 1, 3 & 6 each time they loaded ok but still got the same blue screen error.

Motherboard settings for IDE are:

Configure SATA As = [RAID]
Onboard Serial-ATA BOOTROM = [Enabled]

(Only have 1 HD but choosing RAID should just make it 'RAID ready'.

If anyone out there has any idea at all then please please help!

Slight update, worked out that I was getting this:

"WinXP/fasttx2k.sys caused an unexpected error (18) at line 2113 in d:\xpsprtm\base\boot\setup\oemdisk.c"

It was because I didn't extract the Western Digital ZIP file straight to Floppy, I extracted to PC then copied the files over. Still didn't help though, once the driver had been selected using F6 I got the same error.

I've got the same board and had the same problem using WD Raptors. It's not the raid you need to worry about. It's the way ASUS has the IDE configuration set on this board.

I got this off another forum...

The "red" connectors are for a seperate Ultra133 controller and you must use f6 to install seperate drivers.  The "blue" connector runs off off of the ICH7R southbridge so you do not need drivers for it.

I connected the CD-ROM drive to the "Blue" connector. I still had the same error connecting just a cd-rom drive.

According to the manual you cannot connect just a CD-ROM drive to the blue connector. It must be slaved to an IDE drive (i.e. HDD then CD-ROM on cable).
Once I slaved my CD-ROM to an IDE drive I had laying around the office I was able to install my OS to the Raptor I had connected to the Red SATA.

After that, everything went fine.

Yes, you're spot on. I actually worked this out for myself yesterday but hadn't had chance to make another post (honestly!).

I found a motherboard review site that mentioned it yesterday. All I needed to do was plug my NEC CD/DVD drive into the blue Pri IDE connector (it was previously in the red EIDE Pri Connector). Instead of blue screening after the 'Setting up windows...' or whatever the message is, I then got a windows message saying that no HD had been detected. This is what I thought the problem had been in the first place. Used the [F6] option to install this driver,

1. Intel® 82801GR/GH SATA RAID Controller (Desktop ICH7R/DH)

and everything was fine, XP started to install and I repeated punched the air! thumbsupsmiley.gif

Hi,

I have been having simialr issues trying to load XP Pro SP2.

I have:

ASUS P5WD2-Premium
2-250GB Maxtor SATA II HD

I can set up the RAID0 array (via Control-i) boot into XP setup, press F6 to load the drivers from the floppy and I can format the partition.

As soon as it finished formatting it asks for the drivers again from the floppy, even though I never removed the floppy. It won't read from the floppy either.

I've tried everything I can for the last 2 weeks...

I CAN load XP if the drivers are in IDE mode under BIOS...
