Hi everyone.

I was wondering if there was a way to tweak windows 98, im stuck using my Fajhas computer as mine is currently screwed (see software topic) and well, its a bloody dinosaur.

In running a whopping celeron 333 processor, a big 32Megs of ram, and a big ole 3.2 gigs of HD space. needles to say its out of date. but for what he uses it for its fine (email, word processing, freecell, excel and thats about it) but for a few days (hopefully) or weeks (hopefully not) this is going to be my only computer access. i think i should mention there isnt much memory available (300 megs) after cleaning out Everything POSSABLE from it, i cant even dowload updates from microsoft. I was wondering if there were any tweaks i can do to it. i know on XP, i had about 40 things changed when i read the article here and it worked wonders.

Thanks guys

Tweaking Windows 98 is very interesting... somewhat hard to do, really. I haven't worked with it lately, but when I get home (I'm at school now), I'll see if I can borrow my roomate's Windows 98 and set it up on a VMWare system. If I can do that, I can research how to tweak it.

Windows 98 should only take a few hundered megs of space, including Program Files (on intial install). So, whatever else is on there is what's taking space. Try looking around for programs you don't use anymore, or images that you don't want (those can take ALOT of space).

3.2 GB of space is tough to work with...

MDGx is one of the best windows tweak site

BTW, what specific areas did you want to tweak? Or are you looking to tweak for tweaking's sake biggrin.gif

Also, if you want a single collection of windows updates and tweaks for windows 98 se (second edition), you can get the 15 MB unofficial service pack.

Ahhhh I remember my first Windows 98 machine (well actualy win95 I upped it windows 98) it had a 2.2GB hard drive lol my PS2 has a 80GB HD in it now.... best way to tweak windows 98 is hand crawl through the registry change alot of values wich you need to know what they do before you change them (google and like 3 days of on and off work should yeild alot of speed and stability) uninstall anything you dont use. Use MSConfig at the run command and see whats loading up that you dont need ? (does that work in 98 ?)

thanks for the tips, i tried those sites ujjwald, most of them had the same things repeated. i just wanted to make the computer go a little faster, thats all, i dont want to spend a whole lot of time messing around with it, mainly cause its not my computer. On mine, i adusted everything, maxed for performance, and just used MSConfig and restarted when i needed to run a program i had disabled.

This is my fathers computer though and besides Word processing and Email, and some Excel, he doesent know all that much about computers as does most of that generation.

but now it running a little smoother, thanks guys
