I just tried linux, again, I got Redhat 9.0 and installed really easy and all... but now I can't connect to internet, lol... I have no idea wa's wrong with it... I still don't think Linux is the answer for me...
I'm gonna try Mandrake soon...

And if your on a modem (winmodem im 99% sure) you are almost sure not to be able to connect hmmm there is a webpage called www.winmodem.org or com or something like that with some drivers that work for a couple of the winmodems under linux. I havent had any problems getting online with any of the Distro's since I got online with DSL or Cable.

I have always had the same problem, Rezza. I have a Lucent Winmodem; very common modem in most computers. The data modems are much more expensive (>=3x).
Here's the best page for
lucent/agere drivers:
http://www.physcip.uni-stuttgart.de/heby/ltmodem/Check for your type of modem first, of course.
I gave up with it all because there was always some stumbling block...
And if you do end up buying a new modem...
(1) check on the Internet to see if it really is what you think because they always hide it (hint: if it's a winmodem it will say something like "higher performance because it uses your processor"... it doesn't have an unboard processor).
(2) It's also a good indicator if it's fairly expensive.

I bought a modem some while ago and it cost about $30... it was another winmodem.
Also...
linmodems.orgGood luck.
Mandrake is very good, although I've wanted to own Redhat 9 for awhile; just whenever I look at the back of the box and see the Bluecurve theme.

Yep, you were thinking in terms of the actual type of modem and not the drivers site (used for Linux).

my modem is HSP 56MR, I got it configured, as a generic modem in Linux, not sure if it recognises it, apparently it does... then I activated it and I am wanting to dial into my ISP, but it's like there is no dial up option...

damn it. I decided I should delete Linux and wait for Mandrake as I know a couple of people who are really confident with it... so I deleted the partition that RedHat was on and resized the Windows Partition back to it's original size...
I rebooted and instead of booting into windows I booted into Grub (?), I think tha's RedHat's OS selection screen, I just get a console, I don't know what the hell it is and I can't do anything with it.
I tried my Windows XP boot Cd and performed a repair installation, no change, I didn't have acess to another computer to ask for help, so I was forced to wipe the slate clean and do a new installation, I got warned I might use the "My documents" Folder... now I am at a friend's house and Windows is installing... I hope I don't lose everything!!

Okay, fortunately I have most of my documents intact, unfortunately I have lost all my programs because the registry keys are no longer there, and I have lost all the customizations and configurations I had made to the system...
it's gonna take me days to get it back to normal!!

That's the worst! When these things happen I always wish I could travel back 30 seconds before it happened and set things right.
By the way, HSP is a winmodem (software modem).

What a pity; so sorry it turned out this way.

god damn it, it was a nightmare... after the linux deal.... I started reinstalling my programs... after I had done everything I installed Internet Security 2003, the problem was the apparently I didn't have a supervisor account, it didn't let me acess the net... it took me 2 days to uninstall it since only supervisors could uninstall it

I have finally managed to remove it... phew

Okay, I've patched Blaster, reinstalled everything... again, now I just have to install Antivirus, download 10MBs worth Norton updates and 40MBs Windows Updates and I should be set
