I was working with a movie I have that's in MKV format, which is a DVD format. Unfortunetly, I'm a compatability freak and I don't like having files in odd formats (such as MKV, OGG, ect...). I downloaded the River Past Video Cleaner to convert the MKV to an AVI... bad thing is though the output quality can be a little low at times, and the 28 hour conversion time for a 1hr 48min video seems a little high.

I quite often use the program "Virtual Dub", and I was wondering if anyone knew of a place that I could get a plugin for Virtual Dub that would allow it to recognize and decode a MKV file and be able to encode it into any other format it can handle (such as DivX 5.2.1).

lol I remember on my old P4 (1.8Ghz) it would take me like 20+ hours to reencode a DVD now I can hit like 100FPS wich is like watching the movie in fast forward lol If you have a P4 you find alot of the video aps that are programed to take advantage of SSE2 literly fly.... Its the one advantage Intel has over the old Athlons lol (Athon64's all bets are off as I think it has SSE1,2, and 3 is like on the way or something....)

Try using River Past to convert the MKV file to an AVI file, you can do this without encoding, just renames it with AVI continer, then open the file in VirtualDub ^^

if it still gives you an error after that you might need to install proper codec for VirtualDub or VirtualDubMod to open the file, also VDubMOD supports opening MKV files, might wanna try that also.

This, people, is the greatest first post ever. Like neonova said, MKV is just a container - it's actually a LOT better than the OpenDML 2.0 container that is default for VDub (try putting an openDML avi in an MKV container and see which one seeks better). Honestly you'd be better off putting all your divx/xvid/h.264 content into an MKV container (really, any container than the vanilla oDML)than the other way around. Chances are, the file you have is probably already divx/xvid, just wrapped with mkv. If you're using VdubMOD, you can probably just use the menu -> Video -> Direct Stream Copy toggle and save your avi that way.
