I was wondering if anyone notices a change in performance, game wise, from 16-bit, to 32-bit. A played Condition Zero on 16-bit, and nothing changed whatsoever. Same with Jedi Academy.
anakinsolois
No visual change, even in UT, but the increase in performance is tremendous, so i rarely play gams on 32 bit
mutinymonger
Ya, I noticed a massive performance increase in JA, and CZ. 40+ Bots, hardly any lag, I love it.

whats the diff. between 1028x768x32 and 1028x768x16,is it the amount of color displayed?

Yes and no 32 bit is more colors but more importantly it allows for alpha channel blending and thats just a fancy way of saying you can mix colors and brightnesses at will with those extra 16 bits... the reason I say yes and no is that 16 bits allows for something like 16.7 million colors and the human eye maxes out at something close to that number...

32 Bit colors: I've noticed a big improvement on visual effects... but a HUGE decrease in performance...

I think the human eye maxes out at like 6 million or something... I'm going to look it up...
TrickFinlay2
if there is such a big performance gain why isnt 16bit used for default in monitors?
mutinymonger
Well, 16 bit is some number of thousands of colours, 32 bit is millions. 32-bit is supposed to be "natural" because it includes every possible color combination the human eye can perceive, 16 bit does not. However, if theres 39067206 shades of RED, I don't think you could really tell one way or the other.
anakinsolois
I run 32 bit on my monitor just coz i can tongue.gif
TrickFinlay2
same here,i never really thought of running at 16 bit
mutinymonger
You should try it in a game once and while, speeds up performance quite a bit. If I only had to do half the work I was doing right now, I would perform better too. smile.gif
anakinsolois
I ALWAYS run games at 16-bit. Ive taken screenshots, but i couldnt find the diff btwn 16 and 32 bit

Sometimes games are rendered internaly at X amount of bits then shown on your screen at what ever you have it set for yeah visualy it would be hard to tell in most games...
mutinymonger
We should start a petition banning 32-bit incorporation into games smile.gif It's a waste.
anakinsolois
Well im sure if i had an X800, id run everything on 32 bit just to prove that i could
GTX5_Crusader
I run most of my games at 32-Bit, except for some really high-end games (Joint Operations, Unreal Tournament 2004, Doom 3), which then I use 16-Bit.

I do notice a very small difference... but not really enough to sacrafice so much performance.
