What kind of batteries do you guys use, what are the most efficient? I have a sony mini-disc player, and I can use it for about a month on the same battery. Just standard batteries, nothing fancy. Anyone else know good batteries for these types of things? Also, cost efficieny is important.

I use Duracell, i like the little colour coded bunnys.
But i don't suggest that you use them because they actually tend to be crap, also philips batteries are dodgy because one minute my cd player has 2 bars of battery. Then if i turn it off and put it back on its gone down to 1 or sometimes 0 bars.

Alkaline for non-rechargeable and Lithium-Ion for rechargeable

I'm not up on the current market trends in the battery industry, but how much does a lithium-ion battery cost (/w recharger) ?

I like Energizer NiMH Rechargeable. The last a really long time plus, after charging them many times they still last the same time as they did when you first bought them. I also use an Energizer NiMH - NiCH Charger.
Here is a site that might help you out. It shows batteries & chargers, plus costs.

One problem with Nickel based batteries is that you have to fully discharge them before recharging them, else the battery life gets (slowly) shortened. Fortunately most devices these days(cellphones, iPods, laptops etc.) use Li-Ion so its not much of a problem anymore

Batteries? What are those?

I rarely use batteries... about the only things I use them in are my cellphone and portable CD player... and even then my portable CD player is in my car on a car adapter...

Cell phone, I have a knack for losing things... Also, I see no point in getting one for the most part. People that know me know how to get a hold of me, and it's just another phone number to give out. I must be in a timewarp or something, i have been using alkoline for years. Once, i heard somethign on the news about LI whatever they're called batteries, but never cared for it. Plus, I thought they would be really expensive. Maybe I should look into them now...

Anyone heard about toshiba's new batteries?
Its air + water + chemical = 20 hours of Mp3 player power. Or something like that, of course it'll be a time until they become mainstream, but that is what we should expect to replace todays batteries.

Sony's is 30 hours, out in a few months

20 hours? No offense, but that's not much at all... I have a mini-disc player, and one alkoline battery, duracell for example, runs for about 50 hours. Let me calculate that... 20 min walk there, 20 back, couple hours each day..let's say 3... so when I was going to college, I got 3 2/3rs hours a day, for about a month, maybe 4 weeks. Do mp3 players use 1 battery or 2? My mini-disc player only requires one. Neat idea though, using air and water... something very plentiful on this planet.

Its not really the length of it, its more the ways how easy the power is made. With water, air and one chemical.

I wonder who thought of that idea, pretty original..

What you mean? I guess i've been thinking that something is new when really its the same old thing, right? I do that quite a lot.

I mean the idea of using chemicals, air and water.. that's just out there. Would be like me deciding to power my PC with fruitopia. I just find it original.

I don't know, because i don't actually know what Methanol is. But apparently there started to be used in Korea mainly for Mobiles, Mp3 players and more.

I have no idea what Methanol is either. Closest thing I have ever heard of is Menthol, lol

Methanol is like an organic compound, similar to the methane group (if my chemistry is right). Its not very pleasant stuff to be arouns.

If I can find a battery for my portable CD player that lasts for more than 20 hours, I'll be happy. So far... nothing... except for re-chargeables

Do you want a battery that lasts more than 20hours or do you want a battery which says that it lasts 20hours?

the batteries i think your on about are fuel cells. the equation is 2H2 + O2 => 2H2O and it also gives out energy. There is also a methenol based version that should be rolled out later in 2005 that promises about 8 hours life for a laptop. From what I've seen it is recharged very similarly to a ciggerette lighter (ie couple of squirts of methenol and your recharged) sounds good. Only thing thats been holding it back is the over heating buts thats been fixed now.
