I thought it will be good to discuss what your screen saver is, that’s if you use one...
I will start. My screen saver is a slide show that displays my big collection of wallpaper (all 50 mb of it) that I have.

Your turn…

I use an ATI screensaver called ATI Dogs, its pretty cool!!
You can find it and other cool ati screensavers
hereI use it as sort of a security thing, I have the password on screensaver enabled so when I leave my pc, I don't have to log out and I don't have to worry about people getting into my files.
I don't ever worry about burn-ins or anything!

ofcourse you don't "need" them, but you also don't "need" wallpapers, but I bet you have one.
Mine is a real cool one, the monitor turns off after 15 mins.

Mine is just text. It usually says "Be back at _____" so friends that drop by know where I am, or what time I will be back. I had a tara reid one for a while, that was nice. I've had the MKT character select screen still gif image, that was alright too.

I dont use any screen saver, not even blank.
anakinsolois
Aug 8 2004, 10:27 AM
What? That technically isnt possible, you have to set it to blank or none
ujjwald
Aug 8 2004, 11:59 AM
Yes ... so I set it at none. Screen stays as it is for ever. Screen savers have some incompatibilities with some of my benchmark sw, so I dont use em.

Aug 8 2004, 04:03 PM
Yeah thats actually kinda what we meant by blank

Screensavers serve 2 purposes: To entertain people when you have a computer in a room where people come by alot (such as a living room), and to keep the screen from "burning" an image when people are to lazy to shut off the monitor.

Aug 9 2004, 04:34 AM
I dont think that images can be burned onto monitors anymore. It used a problem back in the days of he old CRT monitors, nut the new ones dont suffer from that problem

Default Windows XP Pro. Format, Reinstall this weekend, need I say more. Wonder where my Tara Reid collage is....

Aug 9 2004, 09:45 PM
I know even some CRT monitors today will have that problem. Ever walk into an office with computers that run 24/7 without screensavers? Some of the monitors in there aren't that old. I just think now it takes longer for the image to "burn" into the screen than it used to.
I know that if I leave my monitor on (which is a little old... but not much) and I forget to turn it off (I have the screen saver off) and I come back from somewhere I'm gone for awhile (work or school), I'll come back and have a dim after image of whatever was on my screen for a short time.

How important is it to turn off monitors when they are not in use (w/ or w/o screen savers)??
Posts merged... you're not here for post count are you?

i currently have no screen saver, but was thinking about getting that matrix one. hey redhatter, why not just one post instead of three in a row? it looks like a page all of you (i assume that is you in your sig)

Edit: You do know that when you post in the chit-chat section it doesn't count towards your posts (which sucks).

With some newer monitors, it doesn't really matter if you leave them on or off, even without screensavers, as newer monitors are made in a way that they won't "burn" the image to the screen itself. But, think of this though; Even newer CRT monitors still use alot of power... do you really want to be leaving a monitor on 24/7 or when it's not in use? You'll save ALOT of money keeping the monitor off.

Yeah I set my moniter and stuff to turn off after like 10 minutes (had it at five but that got anoying with some of my programs the monitor would turn off during use....) anyway I do have this one screen saver I like to have on at night it has lightning and rain sounds lol I turn the monitor off and sleep with the sound jamming

Yea...I don't have a background because I figured...How often do I look at my desktop...I'm usually looking at the program I'm using.
As for screen saver...I read somewhere that by using one you just end up not giving your hard drive any rest at all.

But that shouldn't really be an issue if I'm leaving my computer on all night to download stuff. But hey, every now and then I do end up leaving on my computer doing nothing so it does get some rest. Like most people here I just set my monitor to turn off....I set it for 15 minutes though.

Your screen saver would run your HD if you dont have enough memory or if you had some programs running and a screen saver too (although unless you have TONS of ram your HD will always be accessed just by windows) Hmm you make a good point having a background eats up system performance too lol
