I havent had a chance to play with it yet but if I could get a virtual PC program that would install under XP I would try it smile.gif
.::PHPfanatic::.
It would take me days upon days to download Longhorn. ohmy.gif
actz
it took me 4hours to get it tongue.gif just split your hd into 2 with partitionMagic or some other utility that does that and make sure the new partition is bootable then just install Longhorn on that partition and when u boot you choose either Longhorn or XP

once your done with it you can delete it from the startup menu and merge the drive again
Troa34
are there any free partition programs? cause the demo for magic only lets you use the program but it wont let you partition.
Rezza
I am writing a guide on installing a second OS for the absolute beginner, it's like 4 pages... will be done by the end of this week...hopefully....

and then I am doing one on the ins and outs of a digital camera smile.gif

I have the ideal site for you know whats and I'll send it to you if you want. Although, I probably won't be able to until maybe 6PM tomorrow, so I'll just send it to you without knowing if you actually want it or not.tongue.gif

Ok, what i have is Longhorn 4051. It was an iso, i extracted it with isobuster. But what are my next steps? One time I even got as far as installing it properly, but i needed to activate it?! How do you do this?

Can anyone give a short but good step-by-step guide or something?

I would be forever gratefull!
actz
dont extract the iso just burn the image using nero or another software then you will be able to install it from the cd.

ISO files are images of a CD so they are very easy to burn onto a CD and make a exact copy of Longhorn... if you dont have a CD burner then you wont be able to install Longhorn.

Once you have burnt the iso to a cd it should just load as soon as you insert it back into your computer and you will able to follow the instructions.

You may also want to partition your harddrive, split it into two so you can install the new Operating System on a different drive then your current one. This can be done using partition magic or some other freeware one not sure of the exact name.

If you do a partition make sure you indicate its for a OS to be installed, then you will be able to install Longhorn from the CD and remember to select the new partition you made as the drive to install onto. When you boot up you will have a choice to go into your current OS or Longhorn.

Its not that complicated but you do have to follow those steps or you could mess you computer up pretty bad.

hey rezza, i would love to see your beginners guide, plz post me a link.

I can't believe people are reviewing different alpha builds. Ridiculous.
actz
yeah i agree its ridiculous but the reviews aren’t real reviews they are more like previews of what is to come they don’t scrutinize any particular problem of course because its years from being complete.
Rezza
ah.. man, My guide is still not done... I did a few pages in November but I lost interest.

if people still want it, I'll be more than happy to finish it off...
anakinsolois
im REALLY interested in a guide! Im a n00b where installing OSes are concerned
Deftone
reformat, make a bootdisk or use the cd and in your BIOS tell it to boot from either one. from there its just simple coz u follow the instructions of the installation.
Rezza
hehe... lol yah, but get back on topic mad.gif

Good review Actz! I gotta say that at first i was also really disappointed in Longhorn... it really wasn't as good as i expected.
Deftone
i could tell i was going to be disappointed from the moment screenshots started coming. But then again, thats all a new windows ever is if u look at it, take the base from the earlier windows and then add some new features, fix bugs and maybe change the look somewhat. The way things go for all things actually, not just OSes.
psYchotic
I agree with that deftone, but they can't really change some things. If they did lots of software could become incompatible, and that's not what we want. We can't have it all. Windows is windows, nothing to do about it. And for the disappointment longhorn 4051 maybe was for some of you, maybe it's because it's a developers version. The earlier were too of course, but if you look for longhorn on the internet, you'd see "Longhorn 4051 PDC" and PDC stands for "Professional Developers Conference".
Deftone
indeed you bring a good point. Windows has to remain as windows, the same product or it would be like a new OS with new driver definitions and such, a big hassle. I guess we shall deal with the changes.

I agree.
gofikphoenix
i wasn't disappoint wen the screenies came out they looked better than it really was.

ahh well .. I hope longhorn is better than XP .. in terms of security at least
anakinsolois
its supposed to be MUCH better than XP, and i guees we can use SP2 as a guideline.
