maybe it's a linux format extended to other systems?

Ogg Vorbis

Actually it is one of the better compression formats for audio. The problem is, most portable devices do not support it.

Also Ogg means that if Frounhoffer decide to stop allowing MPEG Layer 3 licencing, or change it to include copy protection systems, we will still have a compression system for music.

That is one of Oggs primary goals to provide a free, open source, interferrence free music compression system.

I'm just starting to convert my library of music from mp3 to Ogg.
Ogg, unlike mp3, is always being improved and will be around as long as there are geeks with spare time.

Luckily for us, more and more media players are including Ogg in firmware updates.
But it will be another year or two before it's in the "consumer" space.

i see, thanks for that

jacbo, I hope you are not converting from mp3 files to ogg files. Converting from one compressed format to another is always a bad idea as you lose even more quality.
