I'm getting longhorn in a few days. I just wanted to know the problems I might encounter while using it and what to look out for. Any one any suggestions?
TrickFinlay2
kinda unstable and good luck with hardware detection and drivers
Rezza
I don't really think you should start using it as such, it's best to keep your old OS around because you will most definately want to go back evantually.
anakinsolois
Yeah, um dont expext your current Intel onboard to be recognised. Also u may have probs with a P3, i dunno but i read sumwhere about p3 users havin probs
Rezza
and your GFX better be up to date, not just the drivers.

I partitioned my drive and installed Longhorn 4051 (the PDC version) on a Celeron 700 machine. (192MB RAM and 4MB onboard graphics) and it ran slow as hell.

Took about 4 minutes to start up and it was displayed in 4 bit colour depth! Opening folders from the start menu took about a full minute and I never did get the colour depth corrected.

Deleted it from my partition after a few days and thinking about trying Linux next.

Been there, done that, got the scar marks.

At this moment in time (well when 4051 was released) Longhorn has no amazing things that makes it worthwhile installing it. Remember that its being released in 2006 (probs) so its got about 2 years of coding and re making to be done. If you gotta network then you're doomed because it won't recognise it. Even if you do install it then you must remember to back-up before you install it. After about 10 minutes the flashy lights get boring and the novety goes away. How long until you uninstall it? A day...maybe 2.
TrickFinlay2
probably not worth it dude, maybe in a year to a year and a half i will reinstall it,or whenever it gets to the beta stage
gofikphoenix
I will probs get it when it goes into Beta like trick here. I think i will sign mi mum up for beta testing wink.gif
SuranWrap
I like XP. I think its the best Windows OS since 3.1
Long Live Microsoft!
anakinsolois
Yeah shravan, i just remebered since ur broadband is kinda networked it may not be too good an idea to try out longhorn. Also a 20GB drive may not be enuf to support 2 Oses
Rezza
nah, 20GB is plenty enough if you only have the 2 OSes on them and a few files. What I'm more worried about are the Graphics cards, unless you have a 64MB AGP card, longhorn won't recognise it, I think.
gofikphoenix
You need a good 512mb of RAM to run Longhorn well. You are also recommended to have over 1ghz and about 30gb hardrive. But yeh 20gb will work. I agree Suran that Xp is the best. smile.gif
anakinsolois
I think Longhorn ran with 384 MB, in the alpha stage at least. Yeah ur 800 Mhz may just not cut it. Im pretty sure it doesnt support older onboard intel cards, i went thru sme beta sites, they had onlt ATi & nVidida listed under supported. And theres practically no point, since many of your programs just wont run.
gofikphoenix
Yeh, it does run but like i found out it runs at a terrible rate. Basically if you want the full goodness of Longhorn in its alpha stage then you're not gonna get it with 800mhz and less that 512mb of RAM. Not that there is much for it to have a 'full goodness' in the first place.
shravan
O...k you guyz have now talked me out of this. ... I'm NOT getting it smile.gif
actz
yeah definately not worth it yet wait till it hits beta stage i say... its still interesting to check out but it wont be stable
anakinsolois
Check out Windows Server 2003 in the mean while. Its a bit more powerful than XP
gofikphoenix
good to hear that you saw sense. as i said i have a buld 4051 cd sitting on my desk untouched. its just a waste of your computers resoures- good choice mate.
