Im a relative n00b where GN is concerned. I visited the site sometime in Deec or Jan when i was searchin for an XP2 beta, and i ended up joining GN on Jan 4th. But on the forums i hear everyone talkin bout 'the old geeknewz' or 'how it was before' and about 'that hacker attack'. While i can just guess , can some one fill me in on what happebed? Also i noticed that most admins like actz & bb joined on Nov 3, when site restarted...

Well, I wasn't registered then but have heard about it.. GN basically got hacked and got back up early November... that's basically all I know..

Basically actz had a real life and had to step away from the site for a while. I wasn't an admin then, so it was pure chaos with no authoratative rule. In this itme, IPB 1.3 was released and it contained security fixes that were never applied ot the site since actz was gone.Someone found the site and basically destroyed everything to explort the hole.

GN History starts back in 2001 but it was known as NextGenConsole.com After a while I decided to do name change as the site was no longer focusing on console news but on all tech news. The site then moved over to the new domain GN and we used the php script postnuke you can check out how it looked back in 2002 here but most of the pictures are broken. Well then the site went down for 2 months as I was traveling through all of asia. In later 2002 we moved everything over to the new script and started out the GN that looks similar to the one we have now. This was up for quite some time but with only myself working on it something just couldn’t be done. The forums fell apart due to members going off topic in every thread and no or little mods. At that time I was working full time and would rarely get a chance to be home longer then 5 hours to sleep and go back to work.

Around September of last year GN was hacked through InvisionBoard. The timing couldn’t have been worst as it happened a day before I was moving to Hawaii from London. It then took 3 weeks for my computer to arrive and for me to move in so the site was down for about 2 months.

The down time is probably the best thing that could have happened to the site. I know that sounds stupid to say but we needed to start off from a clean slate and I think we have. Now we can focus on the future and nobody has to worry about the site going down for that long again. We now make daily backups so members or the db won’t be lost and we plan on being around for a long time to come.

In the last 5 months things are not only back to normal but just about every aspect is better then what it was. The word is out we just need to keep it going.

I remember ye olde geeknewz... i must have started visiting here late 2001 or early 2002...but i only got round to signing up for the forums in mid 2003, strange me. It at Archive brings back memories and also reminds me that Geeknewz has improved amazingly.

GN should NEVER go down again with all security fixes and nightly backups. I was actually on the site at the time (makes sense, right?) and browsing the board. I went to refresh and BOOM it was down. I still remember... it had a scrolling Mr. Bean banner at the top of the page at one point and when you went to log in it had a message telling the administrator to look out for holes next time. As actz has said before, this is a nonprofit site and it's stupid they'd knock it down. I was ecstatic the day I came back and saw it was back up. I wasn't going to give up.

It's interesting to look at the board when it was v1.0.1 . I tried to look at "actz avatar full pic" but it's down of course. I don't even remotely remember it when you were using PHPnuke although I was a member at the time I now know. History that interests me... I thought I'd never live to see the day.
