I think there should be a "National Opposable Thumb Day" assuming there isn't one already. We take for granted the opposable thumb and never stop to think about the many things we'd no longer be able to do and how difficult it would be to do some of the easier, more trivial things that are done everyday without it. Everyone should be required to wear a 4-fingered glove for a day. The index finger and thumb would go in the same finger which would be thicker than all the others; this way the whole thumb, including the part which is mounted to the palm, would be disabled.

Just an idea that popped into my head on Friday.

it would be kinda hard to write in school without the use of thumbs... I would have had major security issues until about 9 years old without my thumb.

Oh, you'd be allowed to take it off at school. Either that or it would be a school holiday. I like the second option much, much better of course.

Tape your thumb to the side of your hand. Add several pieces of tape to make sure your thumb can't alone lift the tape (or at least make it hard to). Then, try doing some daily activities, such as lifting a glass (well, be carefull with that one), typing, gaming, using legos, holding a phone, or some chores. I think some people will be surprised at how much the thumb really comes in handy (no pun).

well, it only comes handy because those things are designed to work inconjunction with the thumb, If we had no thumb to start off with, then a lot of inventions would look different.

Who knows, if we didn't have thumbs the world histroy could be radically different. Maybe some king got killed in a battle with a sword, the killer relied heavily on his thumb, if he didnt have a thumb, then the King would survive and then live to change world history. etc.

You're right Rezza, that aspect of it I didn't think of but since we do have opposable thumbs and objects are designed for us specifically because of this I think there should be a commemorative day.
